blue ramm

The fact that the store got them from what sounds like a local breeder is a good sign. Imported blue rams tend to fair poorly. When they d die, (as mine did) it seems to happen suddenly. Fish hangs in corner and dosn't move around much for about half a day. It usually happens in the first few days, but I have heard of rams dieing after a week in good water conditions.

If you want to get any fry from future spawns, then I suggest leaving out the corys, as rams spawn in the open on flat rocks, and are known to be lacluster parents. If I had a to play another tank with rams as the focus, then I would go with pencil fish (more entertaining and less likely to snack on fry than tetras), and hatchet fish (will school and stay very close to the surface.). A trio of otos for agea control and scavaging and you're good.

Female rams will have bright pink bellies when they aproach spawning time. Males will not.

Good luck

You'd want a fish that likes warmer temps...like 80 where the rams are comfortable...I have 2 neon dwarf gourami in with mine, they get along fine, but when my rams spawn they can be pretty aggressive towards them....chasing them around until they're hovering in a corner. Only until someone eats the fry that is....lol...

My male ram is a really good daddy...does a great job keeping the others away from the babies for a little while, but then I think he just looses interest and someone ends up eating them as soon as they show thier little faces. If I want to keep the babies I take the eggs out of the tank and raise them seperate from the parents.

Hmmm i dont really know if they are a mating pair.....they do like to pal around when ones not chasing the outher...id imagine some baby ramms would fetch a price around here seeing how their so hard to find....i mean i know their not really expensive i paid like 12 bucks for my pair their just not something u always see and i dont know anything about raising the fry.....so..and i wanna stock the tank some more ....
anyways....i read the bottle of fertilizer i got for my plants and it says its safe for the fish but being how the ramms are more senitive is the fert gonna hurt them? and does the carbon in the filter take out the chemicals in the fert?

I can't answer your question about the ferts.....but as far as whether or not the rams are a pair...if you're not intersted in breeding them...don't worry about it. As long as they are getting along nicely, if they are a pair and do spawn....the parents or any other fish in the tank will take care of the fry...so you wouldn't have to worry about raising them. And if one does manage to escape being eaten...it's an added bonus ! ;)
