Blue washable furnace filter for pond filter?

The ones I was looking at are blue on one side, white on the other, and about an inch thick. Labeled as wet/dry pond filter media (though how you'd ever have DRY media in a pond filter is beyond me :) ) Comes in a 10' roll, 13" wide. Does that sound like the same thing you tried?

I don't know about the furnace filters but I've used the blue evaporative cooler pads. However, I've read on some other Koi/watergarden forums that you shouldn't use these with fish as they are treated with chemicals to prevent mold. Makes sense but still, I've used them for two summers, I have fish and I have had no problems with them.

Not looking to get out of buying the 'real thing', just exploring options...
What about quilt batting? Rolls of 100% polyester batting are easy to get at the craft store...have to be sure it is not flame retardant, and is not treated any other way...and what is filter floss, exactly? Lupin mentioned it in a thread as clearing water nicely. Can I get that in a big pad, or will I have to sell children to afford it? It looks like quilt batting in the pic I saw of it...

I buy the large king size roll of 100% polyester quilt batting at my local walmart for 10.99 it lasts me about 2 months and it works great. you cut and fit the size you need I get the thick fluffy one its thicker then the regular and it doesnt have any flame retardent added SOME that they carry does so read the bag to make sure you dont have the treated one.
