I got a couple of bluegills in my tank right now before I get some more bass in there but they look sick and hang out towards the top. At the base of there fins it looks red like there bleeding but theres nothing coming off of them they just look red at the base of all there fins, any help would be appreciated, thanks.
let them go. the clean, roomy, familiar waters of where they came from will facilitate their healing, not to mention not being stressed out being in an aquarium. don't get me wrong i don't have a problem with keeping native fish if you can provide an adequate environment, in fact i had a couple bluegill myself a while ago, but if they're getting sick then something must be wrong, just let them go home.
My tank is 55g, I got two penguin 330 filters on it both filled with carbon media, one powerhead, some live plants, rocks, and driftwood, and I have a 96watt pc for lighting. As for quality of water amonia is 0, nitrite is 0, nitrate is 20, ph is 7.2 but the alkalinity is really low. As for fish I got two temensis peacock bass, one barracuda and one oscar, oh yea and one pecostomus(spelling) and one crawdad. I hope this helps, sorry I didnt put it in before, I thought about it after I posted it.
What's the temperature? While bluegill are considered warm water, they are by no means tropical, and constant temps in the upper 70's, such as the oscar and pleco will prefer, will not make the bluegills at all happy. Mid 60's - low 70's would be much better for them, but not for the others.
If most of these fish are juveniles, the situation is likely just going to get worse. Large, messy fish in a 55 is, IMO, a recipe for disaster. One oscar and a medium pleco in that tank would be considered stocked at adult sizes--add in the others, in addition to the widespread water/temp preferences of the group and the fish are not going to have their needs met very well.
Sorry--I know they are cool fish, but if a 55 is the biggest you can offer them, you really should consider other fish more suitable to the tank. JMO.
I agree, I dont plan on having them for very long but they are small fish and I do plan on getting rid of them as soon as they get a little bigger. There all about 2-3 inches a piece but I do keep the water pretty warm in there due to pbass and I did think about that but the lake were I got them from does get into the 80's in the summer time, but the water in there is super clean and clear so it could just be the change of habitat. Ill just throw them back in there. Thanks for your help, you seem to always be the one to reply my posts.
