Bluegills as a pet

why not turn it into a tropical aquarium since bluegills and goldfish are out the door for a 10g?

You could still get some sunfish, bream or brim (whichever they are called in your neck of the woods). I was looking at the site and decided I might try some blue spots, they only get 4 inches long or maybe some pumpkinseeds. You'll still need more than a 10 gallon tank though.

I'll just return them to the lake when they get to big.
Please do not do this. captive species, native or not, releqased into the wild are a vector for disease. If anyone released an ich(or other captive disease) infected trout into my local waterways, castration would be like heaven compaired to what i would do to them.

Another nice native species for a 10g are Darters, there are a bunch of differant types even here in Wisconsin, I picked up 4 Iowa Darters, they are very colorful and have funny personalitys, they stay small maybe 2 inches.

I have kept bluegill and they are quite similar to cichlids infact some say that they are north american cichlids. Anyway with that said treat them as you would a Jack Dempsy or a Green terror. In other words they need at least a 75 gal for a pair and they can get aggressive also they eat ALOT which means they make a lot of waste, overfiltration is a must.

no, FW sunfish are Centrarchids (the ocean sunfish is a Mola mola, different family), bass are in a bunch of families (Moronidae, even Percidae, I believe).

maybe there's a few basses in Cichlidae, though. :) Cichlids are incredibly diverse, so I don't even pretend to know most of them.
