newbie here. i'm about to set up a 60 gallon for the first time and have a question about setting up the tank stand. on some of the tanks i've seen, ppl place a styrofoam board in between the tank itself and the stand. what's this for and is it neccessary? any advice is appreciated. thanks.

I've heard of this being used on uneven surfaces to "even it out" so the glass doesn't stress and crack. If your tank has that plastic trim around the bottom, you shouldn't need styrofoam.

Mako is right - its a little insurance for any imperfections in the stand surface - I have used astro turf kinda carpet stuff as well...it just helps distribute the load

Shark,

I used a 1/8" thick piece of cork between my 55gal glass and my wooden stand top, mainly because it was a hand me down tank + I was a newbie and I read about it in a book. You can actually see the uneveness of the surface that the cork compensates for! I found the cork roll at a hobby/craft store and used double sided tape to stick a piece to the top of my stand (cut to size exactly the size of the o.d. of the stand base.). It's a little extra comfort if you're uncertain of the stand or base...especially if you're throwing 55gal+ in there!
