Boeseman Rainbow Fish Chameleon

Hey Everyone,

I just moved my two Boeseman Rainbow fish from my quarantine tank to my large tank this weekend and I've noticed that for the past few days one of them has been chaging from the vibrant red color to all silver. It's really weird as sometimes he is silver and other he is red. He is very active and eat's like food is going out of style. I could only find one comment on rainbow fish changing color and that is supposedly due to water quality or sickness. I know my water is perfect and he does not appear sick, so I'm not really sure if this is some sort of spawning behavior?

Has anyone else seen this?

Cheers,
Jeff

Yep, the rainbows will change color for spawning and courtship. My tourquoise had striped down their backs and sides that would ripple with sliver, blue and red when they were in the mood. Very cool to see, and not a problem.

They'll change color depending on mood and surroundings too, as well as in the morning and during the night. Nothing to worry about -- unless it stays that way all of the time, which might indicate that something is really stressing him out.

I love how the rainbows change colour when "in the mood". It is quite something to see!
But are you sure you have Boesemani Rainbows? They aren't red at all, more of a blue/purple, with yellow/orange? Or at least mine are????

I agree with Doublette, they sound like New Guinea Rainbows. I have a pair of males that were a deep red when they were young, but now at 3 years old, they look cherry red with silver highlights.
I also have a breeding pair of Bosemanis. The front half is silver and blue, while the back is bright yellow.

This site has good video of Rainbows so you can figure out what you have (or want to buy) :D

Thanks guys! Yeah that's what they called them in the store, but after doing some more research this afternoon, I see that they are not Boeseman's. UNfourtunately I've not been able to identify them at all. Even from the sites that are only about Rainbow fish. Thet are long and slender, not rounded like the real Boeseman's and have bright red tails and fins. The front half is silver. Any ideas what they might be?

They don't look like the New Guinea Rainbows, but are the same shape.
