boiling rocks

I bought all the rocks for this tank at a landscaping supply store. Boiled every single one of them. I just don't see the likelihood of them exploding as anything more than highly remote.

that is.. until it happens.

btw MG. thanks for taking care of my light work for me. ;)

as for bleach.. the way i see it, bleach kills 99.9% of bacteria.. and 100% of fish. :)

I'm a big fan of the soak, scrub, 10% bleach for 30 mins, rinse, soak in water with prime over night, rinse, scrub, rinse and you're good to go method.

Why go to all the trouble of boiling if there is the remotest chance of a rock shattering. It sounds too much like russian roulette. I like my rocks the way I find 'em... in one piece.

Q

I didn't boil or use bleach. Just soaked/scrubbed/rinsed a few times in a 5 gallon bucket. Didn't seem to cause any harm to the tank. I did check them first with vinegar.

:iagree:

there is the potential..why risk it?

Is bleach really safe to use on anything that goes into the fishtank?

bleach is dangerous to your tank, but dechlorinator is dangerous to bleach. rinse your rocks (or whatever) until all the bleach smell is gone and then soak them in a bucket with a capful of prime for 5-10 minutes.

Okay simple way of concluding this..
Out of all who have boiled rocks to prep them for the tank, How many have had one chip/break/crack/or "explode" ?? Im sure its 0. The whole idea of throwing a stone in a campfire is a good way to compare this to boiling a rock but the temperature in a campfire is wayyy higher than boiling.
