Ok.... So I thought I had all males......

Turns out I had a female in the mix, though there is no difference between any of them..... and I've looked for all the tell tale differences...

Either way, I came home tonight, looked at the tank, and they had shovelled a ton of gravel around, and had made a pit. In that pit was a grey mass, and upon closer inspection, a mass of wigglers.....Maybe about 100 tops.

They are being very protective. Though normally docile to my cory and two ottos they are being quite aggressive. No complaints, as that's normal given the situation.

The question is as follows.

How/what is the best way to remove the fry from the tank? I don't want these parents tearing everyone up.

While I realize the fry may be eaten, I was thinking of buying a 2.5 or 5 gallon tank tomorrow and setting it up with an air filter already running in my current tank, and filling it with the water from my current tank, making it essentially cycled.

What do I feed them??????

Thanks!!!

I know CathyG will be a big help... :)

Believe me, they're slow growers. Mine were born in March and still aren't half grown yet. Just be prepared for that kind of work. You'll also need a big tank to support 100 babies since they'll all stay near the bottom.

I just read Cathy's page again... very helpful....

I like the idea of raising fry, and there's a couple of lfs's that would take them around here perhaps. But I'm not home all the time, and I think I won't be able to monitor them as much as I need to over the first couple of weeks or so.

Still looking for a way to get them out.

I wish mine (got them from Cathy) were a pair. I think they're two males because they seem to fight a lot.

I've had these four for about 3 or four months. This is a first for them, and again, surprised as they all look identical.

Now I'm wondering how often this is going to happen......

We went away this past week. I did three water changes in three days leading up to our departure. Neighbor was coming over every other day to feed pre-measured amounts of food to them. I did another water change the day after we got home. - got home Thurs, changed Fri am. Also fed them frozen worms thurs night... But if I have my dates right, they laid the eggs on Weds while we were gone?

Sorry to hear they are fighting Aussie Hippie! You could come back and I'll try to do better next time! (Bring your mom, I'll show her quilts...)

As to removing fry - how about a siphon tube or turkey baster? Suck some out, keep them in their own water and fill that other tank with water from the parent tank. Put some filter floss over the intank pipe - I just wrap it around with rubber bands. This will keep the fry from getting sucked up. Keep the temps stable and you should be good to go.

I feel bad for your parents - you should leave a few with them, they might be really good parents and those are hard to come by...

Oh, I'd stuff as many plants as possible in the new tank to cut down on the amount of current. Keep it bare bottom, guess that just leaves you with java moss/fern hornwort and floating wisteria... You can also put in some driftwood or a stone or something to help block the current.

I'll met you in Shelby. . . . you can give me some of them.

If you want to raise some of them, it might be worth letting the parents watch over them until they're a little bigger. I've heard they're good parents.

if the parents are in a spawning tank they might ...take care of the fry.

in a community tank ..they are more likely to eat them.

next ram spawn I catch..I'm moving some babies to a growout tank. the parents seem to eat them after day 2 of freeswimmer..but now..they're hiding the spawns.
