Spiraling out of control

I thought my male bolivian ram wasn't feeling well this weekend since he was acting skittish. Ends up he was just frisky. I was greeted this morning to a rock full of eggs. The female has been dutifully fanning them and the male is keeping everyone else away. My large apple snail tried to move in and the male kept pushing it back though the gravel. It was fun to watch but I removed the snail from the tank. The rasboras are now all huddled together at the other end of the tank. There are also frogs and otos and neither seem to bother the new parents.

This is my fist batch of eggs. Suggestions? I would love to have some survive.

If this is their first spawn, odds are they will end up eating them. Don't be discouraged though, once they start, they spawn about every 3 weeks. Eventually they will get it right.

Thanks for the info. So far they seem to be doing well {keep fingers crossed}

hmmm - so this morning there are about half the eggs. Several of the unfertilized ones are scattered around. But it also looks like there are less of the good ones. {sigh}. Well hopefully there will be a couple left to hatch.

I have wigglers!

When I came home from work all of the white eggs were scattered away and there were about 30 eggs left. When I looked a while later there were only 10 or so. I thought the dad was eating them. Then I observed a trade off of locations that the two kept doing - swimming back and forth. In the gravel were (at least) two little wigglers! They must be ferrying them to the new local.

When do I start feeding them?

Congratulations! :) You shouldn't have to feed them for atleast the first 24 hours as they have the egg sac/yolk to feed off of. Do you have any kind of live food? Or micro pearls?

nope - petsmart is my only store and it doesn't carry them. I have frozen foods though. Would it work to put daphnia and brine shrimp in a blender with water and make a mixture that way?

I don't think a blender mixture would work. Is the aquarium planted? Any java moss? The fry might be able to feed off some microorganisms. Once the fry was "free-swimming", they are ready to eat. Do you think you can get your hands on some Hikari First Bites?

Just make sure you're keeping the tank water clean and feeding 2-3 times a day. The fry will need to be fed often throughout the day to keep their energy. Make sure to feed in the morning especially; it's when they are the most hungry. :)
