Bolivian Ram?

perfect, i really have a very clean system and don't want to do anything close to overstocking...i'd really like to have as few as possible while still having enough for them to behave normally/not stress. thanks everybody!!!!

I have 4 in a community tank. They argue with each other at times. Never any harm done. They dont even seem too interested in livebearer fry. When they do argue they develop stunning colors. You will like them.

I agree, as long as the you only get 2 same sex, you should be good. I have a few male Tiger endler hybrids in with my 2 bolivians and the rams don't bug them. Even if you don't get them at the same time, the rams will eventually get over their shyness and swim with the other fish. I have a non-paired set of bolivians that are still "working on" pairing and they are fine. The females are very shy. I would get two males since they will color up nicely. I feed mine sinking pellets, frozen brine and a bloodworm treat at night. My male colored up nicely in about 2 weeks. I also recommend getting naturally dark gravel (small and smooth) or sand. Light substrate really washes them out (they do prefer sand since they pick at their food after it sinks). I love my bolivians... it's true what they say. They are bullet proof.

in the tank you have planned with plenty of cover you should be ok.

you could keep as many as 4-6 but remember..the female and male Bolivian ram(aka Altispinosa) can be difficult to sex as juveniles.. the most accurate way to sex these is to vent them..the ovipositor of the female will be blunt and thick when compared to the male.
the issue to keep i mind.. while Rams in General are peaceful Cichlids..they are Cichlids and can be conspecific aggressive..in essence..if you have rams in the tank.. they could become territorial and fight..this is especially true if you get a pair forming..but in a large enough tank and with enough cover they should be ok.

I keep bolivan Rams .. they are one of my favorite Cichlids..fairly colorful and full of character..I've seen mine stand up to adult wild angels and hold their ground..
