Bolivian Rams

Does anyone have any Bolivian Rams on this forum? I'm sure someone does, but no one ever talks about them. Everyone talks about German Blue Rams more. Just wondering if anyone has some, and if they are popular (or not).

Also, quick question. I have a female Bolivian ram in a community tank, should I bother trying to find another female or a male, or would she be fine by her self? She seems fine, but then again I've had single schooling fish that seemed fine alone (although they were happier with others).
 
I've had them in the past and lost them in an ich outbreak. I really liked mine, but haven't seen them for sale in my area recently. I think they do fine on their own. If you have too many, or just 2 that don't like each other, they could become territorial.
 
I have 4. Bolivian Rams do fine alone, but you will not see alot of their comical behavior that you see when you have a few. They like to choose their own mates and just because you have a male and female does not mean they will like each other. If you get another female, they will just ignore each other anyway. They best way to get a pair, if you want a pair, is to buy 6 and let them pair off. The others do fine if you have a pair in the same tank, providing their is enough floor space in the tank. The typical territory for a Bolivian Ram is about 12 square inches of floor space in the aquarium.

I asked my LFS today about Bolivians and she pointed me to the GBR tank. :shakehead: Their GBRs were only 8.99 but they were out of them. Might be worth a try in my future even though I think I'd rather start with Bolivians.
 
I have five Bolivians in a planted 60 gallon with tetras, cories, BN plecos and one lone little girl apisto (who lost her boyfriend and got transferred to this tank). The Bolivians are fantastic!! Lots of personality. Always swimming around the front wanting my attention. Good eaters and while they squabble among themselves, there's lots of places for them to disappear to if they want to. No pairing up that I can see, but I don't really want to breed, so that's fine with me. They have more personality than blue rams, IMHO, and I'm told they are much hardier. As I can't keep blue rams alive for more than 9 months to a year, I hope that's true . . . (BTW, Bolivians are listed as Ruby rams or ruby butterfly rams in some LFS.)
 
How do you tell the difference between blue rams and bolivian rams? A google search for both often turns up the same pictures...

I'd like to trade in my congo tetras for BoRs but I want those over GBRs, so I want to be sure I'm getting the right species.

I agree that they're fun / interesting fish. I have one in a 29g community with rasboras, danios, corydoras, and female betta and they mix well.
