Anyone familiar with these books, or recomend any for someone who doesn't know much about the basics of marine keeping (corals, LR, fish, etc.)? I also have tons of questions about things such as filtering. I could probably fill up this whole marine newbie forum if I posted a thread for every question.:D I guess alot of people start out like that though.

The Simple Guide to Marine Aquariums -Jeffrey Kurtz

Starting Your Marine Aquarium -David E. (?)

Dr. Burgess's Mini-Atlas of Marine Aquarium Fishes

Marine Aquaria and Miniature Reefs -C. W. Emmens

I really need a good book with "details" on as much as possible. Those are just some I found on eBay.

thanks

Go for Fenner's book (as Guy mentioned) and also pick up Marine Fishes by Scott Michael. Those two are really good core hobbyist books. I haven't heard of the other books mentioned above, with the exception of the Simple Guide one, which is ok, but doesn't really give as much detail as Fenner's. Other good ones include Natural Reef Aquariums by Tullock, Corals by Borneman, Sprung's Invert book, and Michael Paletta's New Marine Aquarium. For starters though, definantly the first two I mentioned. They're spendy but you wouldn't believe how much you use them, even after a few years in the hobby.

Thanks guys. I am desperate for a good book. I believe I will leave the ones I listed alone and start out with The Conscientious Marine Aquarist or Marine Fishes. I found both of them on Amazon for reasonable prices. I plan on getting both of them before I start up my aquarium. I will also look into the other books you listed, Voodoo. If ebay doesn't have them cheap, Amazon will most likely have them for a good price.

Maybe those books will keep me from asking so many questions.

When I started thinking about starting up a SW tank, I was totally lost on what to do, what to buy, what fish to get, how to setup my tank, etc. After reading the Fenner book, almost every question that I had was answered. It's a great book. You're gonna love it :D

Marine Fishes will really only help you with your fish selection process. It doesn't talk about tanks and setups at all, just specifics on 500+ species of common aquarium fish.

Go for the Fenner book to start. But both are awsome.

I got Fenner's book off Amazon for just over $20, shipping included. It was used, but is supposedly in pretty good cond.

I heard Fenner has other books out, are you familiar with any of them? I haven't searched for them yet, I guess I will this weekend sometime.

Thanks for the suggestions. Until now (or when I get the book), you guys have been my only resource for reliable, detailed answers. Hopefully I won't have to post so many threads just asking easy questions about whether a fish will work in a certain tank or something.

I intend on buying that Marine Fishes before I start seting up my tank...or at least before I buy any fish.

i got it in today. it is excellent, thanks for suggesting it. next on my list is Marine Fishes.

i noticed we have some new smilies...this one must be a diff. race of 7-up dot..:dance

I highly recommend the " Marine Aquarium Reference-systems and invertebrates" by Martin A. Moe, Jr. This book has it all in regard to the "science" of marine aquaria. IMO, it is a must have in any Aquarist's library.

Also if you need any other help also check out www.wetwebmedia.com this is Fenners site and if you ask a question 90 percent of the time he will get back to you in 24 hours if not much sooner. The Scott Michael, Marine Fish book is considered by many the Holy Bible for salwater fish keeping so definitely invest in that. Anyway, hope this helps.
