Had 1 male and 1 female, added 1 more male and female. New female is fine, but he new male was bullied and fins shredded. Tank is 55g, not overstocked. Injured male has been islolated.
I didn't think these guys are this violent. I want to get 2 more, but not sure with kind of behavior.

I'm thinking now that perhaps getting another male will help spread out the aggression so that no one gets injured too badly. Any opinions?

I have always heard that the best way to aleviate agression is to get a full school of at least 6.

Probably best to get more females, not fighting males. If they all have their share, and the school is bigger, it should help. try 2-4 more females.

Bosemani rainbows do best when they are in a school. Add more females,

Good luck

Is there anything else in the tank? Are you sure it's the other Rainbow inflicting the damage?

The reason I ask is that Rainbows in general are not very aggressive. However, small fin nippers like barbs will chase them to death.

If it is the other Rainbow, I would also recommend adding more. However, I don't think it needs to be females. The males are far more colorful, and with a large school, are not aggressive. I have a full tank of male Rainbows, and have not had any problems. Lots of flashing and displaying, but not one injury.

Just a small school of danios and some very well mannered pearl gourami. I did see the bigger male doing the damage, he kept stalking and stalking and wouldn't leave the other alone.

I'm still divided about whether to get males or females. Both theories make sense. If I get more males then the aggression will be spread out, on the other hand, if I get more females maybe he won't feel the need to fight.
I'll just have to think about, worst case and bully will get traded in.
