bosemani rainbows in a 10 gal?

so, after buying the 9 o a 10 gal tank, i broke down and bought myself one too. Now the question is.. what to put in it?
I have read a number of suggestions on here for fish for a 10 gal tank, but could someone perhaps point out the nes that are perhaps easier to keep?

My g/f has decided that she likes gourami's. I have discovered Rainbow fish. Are they compatible? how many?

Also, for the 9 yo's tank.. he hwant angel fish, but from what I have read a 10 gallon tank is not really ideal. I was thinking of getting him another beta and.....? what would be compatible? I am thinking of getting some Danios to cycle the tanks as I have heard the are pretty much bulletproof, could they stay with a beta? He also likes the bosemani rainbows ( he is the one that pointed them out)
 
Bosemani's grow to approx 2 inches so you could put 2 or three in there but that would be about it. Remember the 1 inch per gallon rule. You could do tetras I have serpaes,bleeding hearts and painted all in schools of 4. Platies are nice too. You have to check out compatibility because I think gouramis can be a little aggressive. Another great fish to cycle tanks is the white cloud they are amazingly hardy. I cycled with them and with danios most of my danios kicked the dust during my cycle I have one longfinned danio left he did amazingly well and has grown he is beautiful all 4 white clouds made it through the cycle and are doing great in my 36g. i wouldn't put any bosemani rainbows in a 10 gallon, there is not enough space to compensate for their size, school size, and swimming room since they are active fish.
 
I was wondering about the size because the impression I was getting was that they needed a bigger tank, hence the reason I asked. I would like platys and had originally planned on them , but read someone online that they are best kept in water with salt added and started wondering about compatibility. I like rasbora's as well, but at this point it comes down to what is compatible with the gourami.
 
As convenient as it would be, the 1 in. per gallon rule is not accurate for 99% of all fish. A 10 gal is too small for most kinds of tetras (as they need to be in schools with sufficient swimming room) and all gouramis except for dwarf gouramis. I don't know about rainbowfish, but I really doubt you could have 1 in a 10 gal, because I'm pretty sure they need to be in groups (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

In a 10 gal, I would get a dwarf gourami, a few guppies (male only) and 2-3 oto cats (but only once the tank is mature).
 
I wouldn't bother keeping salt in a platy tank, as most fancy platies found at LFS are bred in freshwater and platies are not brackish water fish.
 
Could try some of the fish listed below you don't need to add salt necessarily for the platies I have three in my 36g and they are doing fine with no salt added.
Good tanks mates for these Gouramis: All Barbs, Gouramis, Danios, Rainbows, a school of Clown Loaches, one Red Tail Shark or one Rainbow Shark, a school of Bala Sharks, and a Spiny Eel. Click here to read more about several other groups of compatible fish. ​

gouramis are not brackish. I keep neons and cardinals with my honey gourami. They do fine together. You could get an apple snail as well for the tank.
 
The only issue with Platies and compatibility isn't a salt issue, it is a ph issue, they like a higher ph, so your other small tank fish (tetras etc.) don't go too well together... not saying you cant do it, but acclimate the fish slowly. Also the platies could go with a beta...
 
Threadfin rainbows - probably OK, Bosemanis - no.
