Hi all. I've been poking around here and found some info on cycling. I like the fishless cycling using gunk from another tank method. Seems pretty neat. My brother-in-law has a healthy tank and he's going to give me gravel to get the thing going. My only question is....where can I get ammonia? I looked at Home Depot, Stop and Shop and Eckerds so far...........they only had stuff with surfactants and/or artificial scents in them. Anyone know where I can find straight up ammonia?

Thanks a lot!

I bought mine at the Ace hardware store. Worked well, I'll never do a fishy cycle again. I do favor a second seeding when nitrites are holding.

Thanks! Went to Walmart and got the clear ammonia. Sucks because I was about 30 feet away from one last night when I left my LFS and thought, "where can I get ammonia?"

thanks again!

I sent my wife to Wal-Mart to pick up the clear ammonia. I guess it must be different out where I am. Ingredients: Ammonium Hydroxide and SURFACTANT.

I wouldn't put that in your tank, surfacants are cleaning agents.

Yeah luckily I did a search and found out that it was a nasty. I hope that other people are also checking the label and not just assuming that all Wal-Mart ammonia is "pure."

Gravel From Other Tank & Ammonia

If you are going to use gravel from an established & healthy tank then you don't need to any ammonia.

Using ammonia is for seeding (feeding) the bacteria and starting from nothing.

Gravel from an established tank already has a good growth of bacteria. All you need to do add a small population of fish, and slowly build it up to a sustainable level.

Ammonia is not necessary in this case.

I've frequently used this method of starting a new tank. I place gravel from an established tank in a bag and drop it in the new tank with a couple of fish.

Enjoy

Is ammonia-hydoxide without surfacants okay?
