I'm looking to add a bottom dweller to my 75 gal African Cichlid tank. I want something really eye catching whether it be a pleco or crayfish or ??? I'm not all that familiar with bottom dwellers so I don't really have any idea of what's out there for BD's. My aquarium substrate is white so I'd like something that's bright red or blue or even black and white striped or spotted. Any ideas? Oh and they'd have to like a slightly high pH. My cichlids are comfortable around 7.9-8.1 I appricate any suggestions. Thanks!

P. alleni (blue cray, blue lobster) are very eye catching, I keep one with my Acei, crystal red cichlids. Crays will eat any fish they can catch and are very vulnerable while molting but ive not had any problems with it so far, it pretty much stays in the cave and rarely comes out. Plecos can be kept with cichlids as well as most catfish(some get very large and will eat the cichlids). There is a great diversity of bottom dwellers that are both eye catching and compatible with cichlids it just depends on your individual tastes and what species of cichlids you have.(some are more aggressive than others) Good luck in your search for the perfect bottom dwelling addition to your cichlid tank.:headbang2:

I have one BN pleco (albino) in my 55 gallon with 21 vicious Demasoni, 7 Yellow Labs, and 4 Acei. I started with 4 and now only have 1. The other 3 disappeared without a trace within the first month. Honestly, I think the issue was that they were too young and small (about 1"). The survivor is a male with his bristlenose and red eyes, which are intact. He's been there for a year. Obviously, he hides during the day and cleans the tank at night. I agree that it's hit or miss with plecos.

If you do go with plecos, I recommend getting something closer in size with your other fish.
