bought some danios

FishyFun,
As far as bioload, you are OK with only those 3 fish. I think the things people are concerned about is that the zebra danios are so hyperactive by their nature that they have a hard time being happy in a tank as short as a 10. They need some swimming room to really be happy. The guppy in there may or may not be OK with the zebras. I have kept them in the same tank before but I don't keep anything as active as a zebra danio in a 10. My QT 10 is for my betta and some otocinclus right now. My other 10 has some female bettas in it. They are quite young and getting along OK. Nothing fast moving in my 10s. My present zebra danios are in my 125 which is 6 feet long. They use all the space they have in there and seem to like having room to stretch their muscles a bit.

Your tank isn't overstocked, it's innapropriately stocked. If the guppy is scratching a lot, as others have said, it could have ich or other parasites. Thoroughly inspect it for any spots, wounds or other abnormalities. If it is just starting to scratch now, I would guess that either the danios brought a parasite/disease with them, or they're stressing the guppy, which has had a problem (such as ich) that is only showing now that it's stressed.

As for danios being good fish to cycle tanks with, they are, along with guppies. Keep in mind you have to treat them like any other fish; frequently change the water, whenever you see ammonia/nitrites. Some say only above 0.25 ppms, I say you should change it even if its only at 0.15-0.20. JMO here.

I wouldn't have added any fish, especially without QTing them. You already have a fish to cycle the tank, and it is less dangerous to cycle a tank with a small number of fish, because the levels won't rise as quickly. If you got the danios just to cycle the tank, you might as well take them back.

There are other ways to cycle a tank as well. You can take established media (plants, substrate, filter, driftwood, etc) from cycled tanks for some of the bacteria you would have at the end of the cycle, or you could cycle it without fish (The fish are there to make waste. Fish food does this also, and isn't in danger of being harmed).

A shorter version of all that is inspect your fish carefully, check the parems, and do WC's when any ammonia/nitrites show up. If I were you I would take the danios back, as they aren't good for the guppy. Hope I was of help,

well im going to be getting a 17G its as long as a ten gallon but taller.i got the danios to cycle my tank yes but i will keep them with all my other fishs i not just going to toss them when i don't want them lol.the guppy doesn't seem to be scratching anymore either so mybe he had an itch.i didn't know they needed so much room but the fish guy is 1" of fish per gallon(i was laughing on the inside).

If the 17g has the same footprint as a 10g then the danios will not be any better off in it as they are in the 10g now....fish need horizontal swimming area not vertical (fish swim from side to side..not up and down)

I agree with the above posters. Danios need lots of lateral swimming space and other Danios to thrive. In other words a bigger longer tank.

I would give them back to the fish store and get some more guppies or other small tropical fish, Neon tetras, for example.

A 20g long should do fine ;)

I Another question what does quarantine do for the fish?

QT allows you to observe and watch the fish for about a week or two to see if any illnesses pop up, so you are able to medicate before introducing the new fish to your main tank or whatever tank you are putting the fish in.

Mainly a precaution to not spread ICH or any unknown parasites to your fish you currently own. Some people do a QT and some don't. ( I personally don't to many tanks as it is :/)

Are the danios Giant Danios, cause those are crazy.

FishyFun,

I keep 2 danios with 2 tiger barbs. And yes the danios are natures hyper fish. I think there fine in a 10g....... always better than the overstocked tanks at the LFS (local fish store). So go you on wanting to keep them. But I also love the idea of getting more tanks if you have the room and the coin. You could use the old 10g as a QT. I personally have never QT anything. Well except feeder gups there nasty sometimes. But that could all change one day when everything dies, I dunno. Knock on wood or I get lucky at the LFS.

But just have Fun.

P.S. I dont know if anyone noticed, is that your guppy in the pic? Its the best fancy tailed guppy ive seen.
