bout to give up on my fish

ammonia and nitrite levels are fine

You're right. That could be it.

It really sounds to me like stress from poisoning caused the ich. More of the symptoms seem to coincide with nitrIte or chlorine poisoning than ich. What exactly are ammonia and nitrIte levels?

i hgad my 20 gallon up for over a year. ive had my 55 gallon up for like 3-4 months.

nitrite and ammonia were at o i believe. but ive never seen my nitrite levels go above 0, so maybe my kit is just a dud. and i use aquasafe water conditioner.

you can check your kit by putting tank water in a cup, adding a lot of fish food, and letting it sit for a day.. you should show ammonia and nitrites then. Or take a water sample to the pet store and have them double check your readings.

If you are using water conditioner, then I would definately start doing some large water changes...

the good 40-50 percent water change last night seems to not have helped at all today.

oone tiger barb right now is just layting upside down on the gravel breathing. the two green barbs are still floating at the very top, or just sitting still or getting nipped at by the other barbs. other barbs arent swimming around

idk whats going on :[i think ill bring a water sample to petsmart today though to see if sits something im missing.

what method did you use to cycle your tank?

i put fish in my tank.

but this isnt an issue of my tank recycling. i had my 20 up 1 1/2 years ago, and when i got my 55 i put in my old gravel and my old filter stuff and its been running fine for months.

Ich is not bacterial, it's a parasite. IT had to have been brought in, probably on the Rams. Once the rams brought it, the tiger barbs are known to be HIGHLY susceptible to it.

When you use the salt method, you should be doing daily water changes, replacing the salt. I think some of your problems have probably come from non-pristine water, as they fish were already dealing with the parasite and in general not feeling too healthy. You may lose some of the barbs, they're pretty weak when it comes to Ich. If you continue doing water changes and salt, you should be able to get rid of it, and hopefully most of your stock will come through.

It's possible there is some other toxin in the water... does it have a wierd smell or taste? It might just be ich, but I don't think it would make fish act like that. Could large amounts of sulfur (used in some water treatment plants in place of chlorine) do this? Does anybody know?

well what should i do now? should i do a water change today? i cant add any more salt cause i just wasted the whole jug of it while doing this already..

I would up the water changes for sure continue to treat for ICK for the appropriate amount of time then get the temp back in line before judging your fishes abnormal behavior.
If they are still sick even if they don't display symptoms or are suffering from the after effects they won't act normal yet give it a bit more time and a few more water changes before you give up.
Nature moves at her own pace!
