Most Mangrove species can take aggressive pruning when older and established. When young simple pruning can kill them. That is the tricky thing with keeping them. They need to branch before any real pruning can be considered and they don't always branch early. Sometimes they like to get a couple feet before they branch out. Cutting the growth tip or roots before then can kill them. But if you get them to that point they are easy to keep controlled. Even though they have the potential to get massive (bigger then a house), their style of growth is easily limited and held back.
As for other plants, it'll depend on the salinity you want to keep. The mid to higher ranges arn't really plant friendly. Low range brackish is usually where plants can be kept.
