Brakish question...

Archerfish are native to where I live and keeping them depends on the species.

The Banded Archerfish (Toxotes jaculatrix) is a true marine/brackish fish, it's natural habitat is the esturine environment next to the coast where rivers/creeks enter the sea. Most of the year they are living in nearly full seawater. They can survive in freshwater because during the monsoon/rainy season all the rivers flood heavily causing the coast to be nearly 100% fresh. They can survive in freshwater but only for a while. These guys should probably only be kept in full saltwater or brackish.

The Seven-Spot Archerfish (Toxotes chatareus) however is more of a freshwater fish. They mainly live in brackish conditions but adults are often found living happily in full freshwater environments hundreds of kilometers inland. This species can be kept in full fresh to adulthood.

Both of these species grow to around 25cm (10inches), are schooling and are fairly active. There are other species of archerfish (Toxotes genus) but I don't know much about them. Hope this helps.
