There are lots of good brands of filters. Are you looking for hang-on-back (power) filters or canister? For HOB's I'd recommend Aquaclear. They're very affordable, reliable, and provide good amounts of circulation. They're also quite accomodating to filter media.
I can't go past Hagen. Most of their products are sold under different names (Elite, AquaClear, Fluval, etc) but they are all the same brand. They are usually more expensive but very reliable, efficient etc. I can definately recommend the AquaClear filters and Elite air pumps.
i heard good things about the marineland visitherm heater and the AC filter i have is working great! I also have a tetra airpump that has been purchase in the mid-90's.
if you're looking for a cannister filter i recommend eheim. you're going to pay more more for it initially but, it's totally worth the investment in the long run. and for heater-- visitherm steath.
I've had great luck with Rena air pumps. I've had my oldest one for 7 years and it still works perfectly with no noise! I've found Whisper air pumps can be noisy if not positioned or cushioned properly. I have to place mine on a rubber dishwashing glove or else it vibrates and rattles like crazy.
