 Bought a 5 gallon hex some time ago and finally put a blue betta in there, Sad when I bought him he was in one of those clear butter-like bowls in about 4-6 ounces of water. I released him into this 5g and within minutes he transformed what looked like a comatose state to a ball of energy. It's like he just woke up and realized that he is a fish and fish are supposed to swim. The tank has alot of live plants including some floating plants. I've had him in there for a few hours now and he's all over that thing! :thm:

yeah bettas are beautiful in a few gallons of water. I had mine housed with some ADF in a 5 g eclipse, but it cracked so they got a brand new 10g :)

Not trying to sound like a moron, but what are ADFs and ottos? I have some ghost shrimp in there. Will they keep the bottom clean or should I expect my betta to make them into a meal at some point?

ADFs are african dwarf frogs...not to be confused with HUGE and very ugly african CLAWED frog

Otos are "otocinclus" and are very very good at keeping brown algae at bay and cleaning the leaves of your plants off without damaging them. They are a small suckermouth catfish and only get to about an inch and a half...I think...they do much better in planted tanks in a group of at least 3..more is better.

The betta may eventually eat your shrimp..all of mine did..lol...if you are looking for something to keep the bottom clean, you may try 2 cory cats of the smaller size....there are dwarf cory cats which would be better for such a small tank, but you would need to get at least 3 or 4 of them as they like to be in groups. The betta shouldn't bother them much once he gets used to them being in there.

Really all corys prefer to be in groups and if you have a single one it won't be very happy and probably will just get sick and die. I do have 2 emerald cories in a 10 gallon with other fish and they seem happy enough.

I hate it how bettas are kept in little tiny butter bowls they can't flare off as much! it doesn't show how energetic they r.

-*Nice pic! Those butter bowls are ridiculous! The one I brought home was half beauty and half out of sympathy. He was sitting in about 1"-1.5" of water!

That is a nice little tank mvigor. I agree with all of your. At PetSmart here in town they keep the bettas is a cup that's barely bigger then a standard bottle of fish food. Wal-mart's keep them in the magarine size bowl. (small margarine bowl of course)

I won't keep a betta in anything less then 5 gallons from now on. My daughter has a little 1.7 gallon I think it is. I had to transfer my betta to it as he was far too aggressive in my 20 gall community tank. After I transferred him in there he flared every time I came near the tank. Now that I got a 5 gallon for cheap at a yard sale, I set it up and cycled with Bio-Spira. He hasn't flared at me since putting him in there.

It's great how much personality Betta's have. To me they are the easiest fish to know if they are happy or unhappy.
