Hello everyon,

I just had a major question about breeding some of the smaller cichlids. I plan on getting some cupidos from a local store that plans to carry them soon and would love to get them to breed. Only problem here is I'm currently in an apartment and getting another tank is out of the question. So, what would be some tank mates that would work with 1-2 pairs of breeding rams and not be able to get at the eggs very well?

This would be in a 55G tank with 2 pieces of driftwood with caves and a few flat rocks set out. I will be going with plastic plants for the time being and hopefully breaking up the tank a bit more.

From what I've been able to gather I really shouldn't go with any type of tetra as they are usually quick enough to get around the guarding parents. Beyond that though I'm stumped. Would cories and hatchets work in a breeding tank?

Oh also...I know it's a cichlid forum, but what have your experiances with hatchets been? I've never really seen them swim in any of my LFS's tanks, just kinda float at the top. Typical for the fish or just in store behavior?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Ok...so I may have titled this wrong. Though does anyone have any thoughts on good tankmates for a possibility of fry? I believe I'll be going with some hatchets, but beyond that I'm not sure. Will cories bother the eggs? I've heard tetras will take them, is this only if they are in the open?

Any help or links would be amazing.

Thanks
