Breeding Blue Rams

Yeah I've seen those posts and honestly have never seen it with any of my apisto fry. It goes totally against thier gut instincts. I'm assuming by now your sponge in the growout tank is cycled, no ammonia, no nitrite. Temp within range. You seem to be doing everything right.

Ok, was thinkin.......and this might sound a little hinky, but cichlid fry take cues from their mother. When it's safe to forage, when to take cover, when to clump up. I know scientists use fake fish to ellicit responses from their test subjects all the time, and everyone's heard of the Dr. Harlow's work with monkeys. Maybe a ........fake mom? Made out of non-toxic clay or silly putty. just the shape of an adult ram might draw the fish down and get them to act more natural. I don't know. You could be right on the genetic abnormality thing too.

Have you got any responses to this question at apistogramma.com?

Hmm, very interesting regarding fake mother fish. I actually wondered about this myself. If there is no parent teaching them where to find the food etc...

I'll have to see if I can find a fake fish statue thats tank safe. (I am realizing that this could lead to all sorts of funny jokes - like what if you put in a fake shark - will the fry think they are invincible, or a fake algae eater?) Actually I am in too big a hurry to go in farther in this vein...

The only responses at apistogramma were no. The experiences were all that the fry kept to the bottom quite naturally...

I have 2 survivors from my attempts and I've been trying like mad to switch them from live bbs cause I am leaving town tonight. The only thing else they are eating is live black worms. They are soo small I have to cut up the live worms into 1/4 inch pieces and drop them in while they are still wriggling. (Its kind of funny watching the little buggers snarf up the worm pieces and swim around with a bit hanging out of their mouths!)

I'll be giving my fish keeper instructions to drop in a pinch of ground up New Life cichlid pellets in the morning and 1-2 chopped up worms in the afternoon. Sure hope this works...
