OK so I know this thread gets posted daily "breeding clowns, clown breeding, etc..."

I am beginning to become impatient. I've had two tomato clowns for a year in my 55g. Niether wants to become dominant and take charge so a couple of months ago I added a much larger one. I assumed the larger female would choose a mate of the two smaller ones and they would become a pair. Unfortunately they all just swim around together. No aggression, no mating just frolic. I have no other fish and only a CBS, some hermit crabs and snails, maybe 25lbs of live rock. Is there anything I can do to set the mood or am I to resolve to hurry up and wait?

The female does do a lot of sand stirring in four or five different places throughout the tank and occasionally picks up some shells and moves them but doesn't really seem particulary interested/disinterested in either of the other fish.

Any hints or tips would be appreciated.

Thanks
BobbyC

Pairing Clownies

Clown fish have the abillity to change there sex they are classed as protanderous hermaphridites meaning they begins there life as it's change to male as they work up the leader board and finally when they are at the top the become female. These changes are not reversible. Your original pair would have already worked out there differences, and tomatoes are one of easier clowns to spawn. I would suggest you either remove the most recent addition (prefered due to the bonding that would have occured before) or the middle sized specimen. Clowns can settle in in as little as 3months and begin to spawn however i have sat on pairs for close to 3years b4 they have done anything. Take a close look at there diet Feeding three times a day with a high protein and lipid based food should help do the trick.
Good luck

My False percs started spawning almost 1 year to the day after I setup their breeding system. A few months later we had more babies then we knew what to do with.

Just wait it out, I'm afraid is all you can do. You could try some 'sexy' music maybe...
