Good afternoon. I have a quick questions I hope someone could answer. I have had a pair of daffodil cichlid for about 5 months now. They recently started spawning. We have a group that is about 4 weeks old and I just noticed newly hatched fry in the tank last night. They are doing quite well and I have been feeding them baby brine shrimp. They've been doing well on it. My questions is: How long does it take the eggs to hatch once the female lays them?

Thanks for any response.

That depends on water temp. Faster with warmer water.

I use to breed Brichardi (almost the same fish). My temp was about 80 F. I notice hatching in about the 3rd day.

Thanks for the reply.

I have a new problem. Now the mom isn't eating. She's hovering above the cave where the young hang out. Each day she appears to dwell farther and farther above the cave towards the top of the tank. I'm not sure what to do now. Water parameters are very good: 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, low nitrate, temp at 78 degrees. Any suggestions?

African Cichlids do not always eat after a spawning, if she is OK she will eat soon. If water is good she should be OK. She just probably protecting her territory.

PS-- Mine use to breed in groups (3+ females and a male or two). They all would share in protecting brood.

Thanks, again.

When I got home from work today she was down lower in the tank near the entrance of the cave, but didn't go in as I passed the tank like she usually does. Maybe she does have another group of young'uns gettin' ready to hatch. Hope so. It sure is interesting to watch their interaction.
