Breeding feeders

i picked up some fancy guppies last night. 5 females and 3 males!

*Cracks whip* MAKE BABIES FOR ME!

why did you get fancies? that was a waste of money. you shoulda just bought feeders. oh well, they'll all serve the same purpose anyway. :p:

yes, theyre commonly known as 'wild' guppies.. theyre not colorful at all really, the males have a bit of color but are very small and do not have the elegant coloration and tails like the fancies... theyre only about 8-12 cents apiece normally.

haha... that sucks... my males were 2 bucks a pop and my females a little over a buck... oh well... fancy food.

it looks like 2 of my females are already knocked up... (yes!)

Yeah I got feeder guppies because they were cheap and I liked the spotted coloring of the males. Less than a week later they are popping out fry (see my thread about first fry!)

BTW, look for some next time at your LFS - mine were only .15 each

Feeder guppy females will be two and a half, to three inches long. Males will be somewhat smaller, and exhibit spots and dabs of color, rather than that large tail display.

And your angels will eat the fry too. Don't let them rag on you for getting fancy guppies as feeders. They will breed just as much, look prettier in breeding tank, and they are generally in better health than feeders when you get them from the store. Feeders are a no profit item for fish stores, so they don't get the same care an investment fish does. Feeders are also usually of indeterminate age, while most fancy guppies you buy are between 2 and 4 months old (just developed display colors).

Guppies on average have a two year life span, sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less if they breed often. With a good stable breeding population, you can hold back a few fry every so often to increase your breeding base, and ensure the next generation is ready to take over when the original fish die. I hybridized my breeding guppies with endlers years ago to toughen them up, and got a three year life span, gold color, and some interesting mutations. So your breeder tank does'nt have to be boring!
