I want to know if anyone can give me some hints on raising our own fish. I know about mollies but as far as the glofish or the tettras what do i need? (i was told i need one male and 2 females as far as mollies)
tetras are a little harder than live bearers, most like my black skirts are egg scatterers that need a high quality food and perfect water conditions. I would move onto convicts from livebearers, much easier to breed.
I would say to get as many females possible for males as much as 1:4 male female ratio, respectively.
I agree with cpetrosky about having perfect water conditions with high quality food.
good luck
:angryfire:thats just wrong, how can a company claim that they alone have the rights to control the reproduction of a species? They may be genitally engineered but there still fish, if someone wants to breed them then they should have the right to do so.
Egg layers generally take more work than livebearers. Glofish are modified Zebra danios. Most Danios are pretty easy to spawn and not terribly difficult to raise the young(although more work than livebearers).
If you want to breed tetras I recommend starting with diamond tetras. With most tetras soft, acidic water helps.
With almost all fish, water changes and live food makes breeding a lot easier.
You can legally breed your own Glofish. If you try to sell them you're infringing on the patent and may hear from a lawyer. The main difference between what you've bred and what you want to breed is that for the most part you will need a separate tank in which to spawn the adults and raise the fry. Most egglayers will eat their own eggs and fry greedily. Standard method is to introduce a ready to spawn pair into a tank full of plants or spawning mops and then pull them as soon as spawning is done. If you want to try an egglayer that you can breed and raise in the same tank as the parents try White Clouds.

Actually legally you can't. And/or is the key modifier. Intentionally breeding and/or…
You can't intentionally breed them because they are genetically engineered and that can be patented. Personally I have trouble with GE stuff whether it's the veggie seed I buy or the fish I buy.
When I was breeding tetras I used a sweater box. No heater, no filter but daily water changes and live food. Made "fry traps" with unbleached yarn attached to pieces of slate for them to hide out. Bred enough it was paying for itself. Of course this was in the early 80's. And I didn't have much $$$$. Some things never change.
"Intentionally" is a difficult thing to prove, unless they can prove you're distributing the fish. Actually i should have used the word "distribute" instead of the word "sell" in my original post.

Will the company find out and prosecute the poster for breeding? Probably not, but that does not change the fact that it is against the law. I do believe that intentionally breaking the law is something this forum is strictly against. Even as silly as the law may be.
