Hi Friends !

I got a few (about 10) 1" labidochromis caeruleus (Electric Yellow) and I plan to keep them in a seperate tank...

Just wanted to know if they're easy to breed and if yes, then it will be a great help if someone can kindly guide me a little about breeding them...

Will they spawn in a Cichlid Community Aquarium ?

At what size do they start spawning ?

What is good food for them ?

Kindly guide me a little...
Thanks !

Like any cichlid they breed easily. You will need to wait for them to pair off and must give them caves to hide in. They will breed in a community tank providing they have hiding places. No caves = no breeding. Once the male has fertilized the eggs they female will scoop them up in her mouth and start the brooding process. She may hold the eggs as long as 4 weeks and may not eat or will eat very little during this time.

Dropping the water level and doing a WC will simulate a rainy season and at that point they will mate. You can still vacuum the gravel during this time but try to stay away from the holding female to not spook her.

You will know she is holding as her face becomes swollen and she won't eat or eats very little. You will also be able to see her tumbling the eggs in her mouth.

IME,I have had my labs spawn in an AC community tank. I have 1 male, and 2 females which are about 3-4" long. As far as the size when they start spawning, I don't really know-I got my labs at the size they are now.
I have read (and experienced) that if you lower your temp 2-3 degrees/do a WC, and feed them a little more high protien foods(live/freeze-dried shrimp/bloodworms) it will help them to spawn.

I really don't think it seems to be necessary to do anything special at all; can't really stop 'em from spawning at all :)

don't expect to make money on yellow labs!

but it is very gratifying.
