Breeding Mollies

Congratulations on the new babies. My black molly just had her first babies too a few days ago. She had about the same amount. Man that is a lot of babies :) I left them in the breeder net for a few days and planted my tank very heavily with some fake plants and let them go since I needed the net for my cichlid who is also having babies soon. I do not think the other fish have ate too many of them since I put them in the main tank. They have plenty of hiding spots and they are fast little buggers.

Good luck with your new babies.

what do you guys do with your fry once they've matured?

We will often put them in the little tank to see what we get, but often end up putting most of these young back into the tank to fend for themselves. Most get eaten but a few survive in the gravel and other hidey holes and mature.

Ok I have another question...how can you tell when they are pregneant? The only reason I knew about this one was because when I bought her the guy said she would have babies in about a week.....

Pregnant Molly?

YOu can easily tell because their bellies swell noticibly and a dark spot "gravid spot" appears on their "underside". I have a gold dust molly that is on her second batch of babies-two survived their tankmates and are now at least and inch and a half, and i noticed one is a boy *uh-oh*. Anyway, the "Molly Mama" is very big again, but i noticed the scales on her belly are raised;is this normal or should i be worried?

Well my views on those breeder tanks is not very positive. I have found that these tanks stress the females out more than it helps in the long run. When a female is stressed she will have still born fry. Mollies are fish that love to have their swimming room. The best thing to do for breeding mollies, if you want to do some thing crazy like this, is to keep them in a very large tank, 30 gallons plus and have plenty of plants. Another thing to do is regular water changes, these guys love clean freshwater. :D

My guppies have had babies in the past, I let them fend for themselves, I have one little baby guppy right now, it is so cute!! It was the only one who survived out of around 15. I'm waiting to see if it is male or female, i'm hoping on male!
