Breeding mosquito fish

you can crush up flake and they will eat it, or you can leave it whole, as the other fish rip the flakes apart the fry will eat the smaller stuff or break off pieces when teh flakes get saturated

Ok, I am going to finally start setting up the pond. Does anyone know of a good battery powered pond pump? The aerators and bubblers that I can find that are battery powered only last around 36 hours. I just need something to stop the water from stagnating.

I actually have a similar setup to yours, I just got it up last fall. I can't get electricity out there either (was told otherwise when I put it up :/ ), so right now I'm thinking of trying one of the battery ones (if I can get one here) and just running it in the late morning - afternoon.

I'm also going to try to come up with some sort of 'siphon waterfall' thingy, but I've no idea what I'm doing, LOL, so I'll let you know how it goes.

I have 2 comets and 2 minnows in mine, so far they seem to be doing good, I threw in some anachris in the fall (I also planted some lily and iris planters I got at Lowes for $1 ea!, but they didn't have time to grow last year, I hope they are still alive, I saved a couple just in case. I'm hoping to work on it this weekend. Their water is green right now, I think they are eating that. They ate the anachris fairly fast and the rest rotted, but I didn't float mine, that's probably why. Just for the heck of it I tried throwing in one of those packs of various bulbs they have at petsmart (onion, lily, apogetons) the onion floated up in a water change, but grew great floating lol! I never could get those onions to grow in my tank. It got flash frozen last year but it's not entirely soggy so I didn't take it out yet, I think it might still have some life in it, we'll see.

Good luck with our setup! Right now, mine is a green disaster. The anacharis rotted and fulled a massive green water explosion. The fish still seem fine, but its hard to tell as I can't see them...

Will they come to the surface if you wiggle your fingers above it?

That's how I check on the goldfish lol. I trained them by wiggling my fingers before during and after feeding, they think it means 'FOOD!' now heeheehee.

I'm trying some tetra pond barley extract stuff, but so far the water's still green. :/

I used 2 square crates from the dollar store (the holes are big enough for the fish to go through), put 2 holes in the bottom of each and then put the bottoms together (so the open ends are facing each direction) and tied them with some of those tie things, erm.. zip ties, lol, with the zips pointing out the top crate. I set it with an open end pointing down, had to put a large rock in the top, then put the plants in the top one. This way they are closer to the surface and hopefully will get enough light to start growing. I'm hoping. ;)
The plants I have are already in those little baggy things. The top crate could probably be lined with something to put non- bagged plants and dirt in to grow other plants. :)

they are as easy to breed as guppies
(just meaner)

i like them because the look like they are wearing lace
