Breeding my Dwarf Platy

Ok. Well how long does it take for them to grow?

I will be getting a 55g for Christmas (already started thinking of stock!).

Will they grow big enough before then? If so, where will i put them once they get big enough?

Am i annoying you with all my questions yet?

You can have just 1 male and 1 female, but you need cover like floating plants, or "fine leaved" plastic plants, or spawning mops so the female can get away for some "me" time. Two or three females would be better.

If there's plenty of hiding places near the surface you can raise platy fry with the parents. If they're in a tank with other fish probably not many will survive.

Platy fry are fairly large, and can eat finely crumbled flake food. If you really want to be nice to the fry, get a start of a microworm culture. Even larger fish will go for microworms.

For a fry tank, you want an air driven sponge filter, not an expensive one with a powerhead. You can also make a sponge filter yourself, but some foam offered for sale has anti-mould and flame retardant chemicals in it- not good for fish!

That is an internal filter, and from experience I have found that one will suck the babys up into the intake causing there death.

A sponge filter is a small animal safe sponge with a tube going to it and an air rock in the tube.

Many smaller fish stores, not chains have them made for 5, 10 and 20 gallon tanks.

wow.... get ready for some fry!

I've also found that platies have their babies over a long period of time... At least mine does. So I doubt you'll have tons of babies at once.
