I have 4 of these gorgeous babies about 1 1/2 inches long each. 3 male 1 female. Ive had them about 2 months and am very anxious to breed. Any suggestions? I traded them for about 10 jewles I had bred, without trying, but I want to really try with these guys. And also Im very glad to have found this site! I have 3 tanks, the brichardi tank is 30g tall with lots of hidy holes that they take advantage of. ph usually around 8. There are 2 yellow labs[very small] in with them that I will trade out if needed, Ill have to anyway if they breed.

I have a breeding colony of these guys in a 29g tank. They are easy to breed - just add water! They will spawn fairly young (about 2 inches, in my experience). I even had some spawn in a 5g temporary holding tank one time. Older fry help protect/raise the younger fry. If you have 3 males/1 female, what will probably happen is a dominant male will emerge, and the other subdominant males will be forced to the corners of the tank, as will the yellow labs. Take them out and leave the pair at that time. Then keep up with your water changes, feed quality food and watch them go! They are great parents, with the only exception being that, if the tank gets too crowded with fry, they might sometimes eat the smaller fry. To avoid this, move out the larger fry into their own grow tanks from time to time. Enjoy - these are great fish that get more beautiful over time - my males are pushing 6 inches, flowing fins and all, with deepening colors.
