Breeding Platy?

Well there are more babies in there... MUCH smaller than little Hercules (named that because she survived against all odds and with very little weed). So now we have about 3 or 4 baby platies maybe? I don't know because their parents keep eating them!

Interesting to read this, as we were just suprised by our platy. We have 1 platy....and now about 8-10 babies, 1/4-1/2 inch at this point. It was a big surprise as I posted in another thread.

As long as you have PLENTY of hiding spaces, and some room to roam the tank, I don't think you need another tank for breeding purposes. I know in your case it was by accident that you have more than you bargained for, but as for those looking to get more platys from the male and females - I say don't worry about it, they'll come soon!
Yes I have 3 left that are growing very fast! Little Herc (from the first batch) is big enough to swim all over the tank now without feeling threatened. The only thing that worries me now is the invasion of future platys! How do I stop them breeding? :laugh:
You don't stop them... not unless you can narrow it down to one gender per tank. And even that can be hard, esp. in the beginning. Good luck!!

LOL Hunter, if you have enough places to hide, they'll grow to where they are too big to eat. I have a baby who is about 1/2 inch now. I saw something dark and smallish while I was siphoning a few days ago. I think its a swordtail, cause my male is black and female is golden. I dunno if he made it, but I'm watching. Congratulations.
Just an aside: My male gourami is in charge of population control. This seems to work. Unless the BGK is having his share, but he has a hard enough time finding bloodworms, so I doubt it. And my African butterfly won't eat anything but flakes. So, I'm sure it wasn't her. I bought crickets but my daughter set them free since the buterfly took a nip and just watched as the cricket rolled in the filter wake. D'OH!
