Breeding Tetras - Seeking Advice/Experiences

I know I risk sounding dumb but could you tell me the name of this dish and mesh cover? I have ordered some mesh from ebay to make something exactly like this but this looks a lot more tidy lol

Nonsense! Your ? is valid.

You can get both the dish & mesh at any of your local "big-box stores" (I got mine from a local Walmart). The dish is a Pyrex dish, it cost me about $9. It's roughly 13" long & about 8" - 9" wide, it fits perfectly into a standard 10g tank & is heavy enough that it weighs itself down. You can get a smaller dish that will fit into a 5g tank for about $6.

The mesh is just gray fiberglass screening, you can find it in the "hardware section" @ Walmart. I got a 36" wide 84" long roll of it for about 4" - 5". Yeah it's way more than I need for this one project, but I've found other uses for it e.g. used some to "snail proof" my HOB filters (I kept getting snails crawling into my impellers). I also used some to create a couple of java moss walls with excess java moss I had floating around. And I've since discovered that I can use it to create tank dividers, good to know for future reference.

I made my DIY egg trap following these instructions http://www.danionins.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=21&Itemid=23 after others that have posted on this thread suggested it (i.e. jetajockey & Liquid_Pyro).

So I set up a breeding tank for my diamonds and after what looked like a complete failure (not sure if you can spot the mass fungus)

I now have around 7-15 diamond fry. Most of the fry I've had survive to adulthood have all been in the main 55 gal so I'm not sure how this is going to turn out...

Thats great news...I have actually just spotted a few glowlight tetra fry in my ten gallon...so hopefully a few survive and grow up for me

any more news sailedNJ?

Nah no more news. I had planned on adding a pair to the breeding tank last week (around Wednesday or Thursday) but things got busy & I never got around to it.

But I did find an anti-fungus med this weekend, Maroxy by Mardel.

It's suppose to do the same thing as Methylene Blue, let's see if it does.

I did get around to adding a pair to the breeding tank tonight. I also treated the tank with Maroxy. Hopefully I'll see some eggs or fry soon. Fish have been conditioned on live food for a couple of weeks now & the water conditions are ideal so I'm optimistic.

Glad I found this thread. Definitely following from now on. I picked up some long finned serpae tetras a couple of months ago, and after admiring them as they've grown, I'm hoping to have the challenge of spawning them. Going to have a few more months before I'm sure that they are sexually mature.

Despite my best efforts I have yet to get any eggs from my neons, even when I've used multiple pairs. As a result I've decided to remove any breeding pairs from my spawning tank & placed them back into the conditioning tank for further conditioning. I continue to monitor the water quality to ascertain current pH/dGH & provide my neons with plenty of live(bbs) & frozen(frozen blood worms) foods. I will perform a water change on the spawning tank later today & then introduce a new pair into it sometime later in the week. I am not ready to give up my the neons yet, however if I don't see any results soon I might give my glowlights a go. My glowlight females have been "swelling up" lately so I'm figuring that if I start conditioning both males & females I might be able to get some spawning out of them. I've started conditioning them in a separate tank just in case but for now the focus is still remains on the neons.

sorry to hear about your luck, but i really hope you are successful as I want to know it is possible as I want to do this one day as well...my cichlids are much easier to spawn at the moment, so just going to stick with them for the time being...
