I believe I was misinformed from my LFS about Brichardi. I saw a Brichardi pair with fry for sale and asked about them. I told the sales guy I have a 55 gallon tank, sand substrate, driftwood & plants ready to be stocked. He said that would be fine for these fish.

So now I'm home and researching these guys. I'm reading contradictions everywhere I look. Some info I'm reading says that you can permanently keep the young and they'll all be one big happy family (in a species only tank). Then I read that isn't true... I've read that they need rock for cover and spawning, then see videos of them in a planted tank.

Can anyone guide me to an acurate profile of these guys? Or even tell me if my LFS guy was right or wrong?

Just to make sure your tank is right for these guys, the only thing you need to do is add some rocks. The driftwood and plants will be fine in there too. The fry will be fine with them, as long as there is enough room for all of the fish in the tank.

when breeding, they can get mean....that's why they end up being in a species only tank....they will eventually kill off anyone else.......they will make a nice colony, though, with juvies helping parents care for new borns

I am still undecided on whether or not I'm getting them.
They caught my eye & that doesn't happen too often. Why do all the beautiful fish have to be jerks?
The LFS suggested Lemon Cichlids, Tropheus and Black Calvus as a possibility. Haven't looked those up yet. I'd love to have ideas and help with this but I'll have to buy from what they have in stock. They also offered to order for me as well. Stocking this tank is going to be my b-day gift to myself. It has to be good!

Tropheus do best on a large species tank since they have a strict diet and are very aggressive towards one another. I would not mix them with calvus and lemon cichlids((Neolamprologus leleupi). You could mix calvus with neolamprologus leleupi, a 55 should provide enough room for both species. Leleupi can be total jerks though.

Thanks for the heads up on the Tropheus. I'm not crazy for the lemon cichlids (after looking them up). I'm still liking the Brichardi & I like the Calvus as well. I believe it was an older thread of yours that I saw the pics of them in. I wish I could keep Brichardi and Calvus together.

Mine are Chalinochromis brichardi not Neolamprologus brichardi as pictured above. They are a totally different species. Chalinochromis brichardi are not nearly as aggressive as Neolamprologus brichardi and actually act more like Julis. They form pairs and don't have the same colony behavior of N. brichardi. C brichardi and calvus can easily be kept together. It's worked well in my tank.

And my white calvus :)

Ah, I see... definitely not the same brichardi. The one's I saw are similar to BV77's photos. They look more like the one in this link (the photo on the left side)

I really do like your white calvus A LOT!
While doing my search today I found another fish I like called Julidochromis Marlieri. I'm liking that as well and the LFS had them in stock. I'm finding a lot of old AC posts about what people have kept with Brichardi but none of them so far have posted how it worked out. So I really think that's saying something about this fish!
