Brichardis and ?

I didn't know that they were that aggresive. They would give keneyi's, maingano, and auratus' attitude? In the same tank, I have a 5 yr. old frontosa as well. I am sure they would not bother him. But how about the other fish I mentioned? I am shocked that they are that aggresive, I had no clue.

There is huge difference between breeding and normal behavior. Brichardis aggressively defend their fry. Some report them pushing the rest of the fish, including other brichardis, to 1/2 of the tank while keeping the other half for themselves. I would bet they would put up a good fight against any mbuna, and they would for sure harass a small frontosa.

The problems seem to happen when siblings are raised together. They will target a fish and a group of 3-4 will attack that fish until it is dead. Google " Brichardi death squad " and you will find that this is a common problem with this species.

The only problem is that they really will take over the tank and will send out " Brichardi Death Squads " to kill other fish.
sounds interesting. just what exactly is a Brichardi death squad????

Seriously: Google it. The Brichardi Death Squad is the group that goes out to destroy other fish in the territory. I honestly have never seen fish use a cooperative tactic like this to kill other fish in my tanks. It's kind of interesting until the actually start killing. Like little Stalins, they are.

:iagree: 100%

Hey austin Brichardi Death Squads are a group of fish that go out and target certain fish and destroy that fish.. Hence the death part..

I have kept Brichardi for more than 20yrs. I have never had any aggression problems with them. They can be kept with Victorians, Peacocks, Mbuna, and pretty much anything from Lake Tanganyika.

Sounds like you have a perfect sized tank for a wonderful community of Africans!

Lake Victorians:
Pundamilia Nyererie (4), Xystichromis All Red (3), Haplochromis Sp.44, Xystichromis Sp. Ruby Green (2)
The rest of the gang:
Tropheus Duboisi X 6, N. Brichardi X 7,
Yellow Labs X 3, Neolamprologus leleupi X 2

As with all cichlids it is up to that species on which it will act, personal attributes i have seen are some docile brichardi then again i have seen some be total terrors..

This is also along the lines with yellow labs for the most part they seem to be docile but i have witnessed a few that were so aggressive i had to get rid of them..

So to say that you are going to see this ! maybe or maybe not depends on your cichlids on how much aggression they will deliver with your stock plan..

IMO opinion Brichardi are best kept in species tanks of 55 gallons or more. They are interesting because of their colony behavior and the fact that several generations of fry will care for subsequent spawns. While this makes them interesting to watch, it makes for a fish that needs to be culled often to manage numbers ( twice a month ) and then you lose the ability to observe the most unique behaviors these fish present.
