Is it safe to put a brick in an aquarium? I am working on making a rock formation at the back of my tank for some african cichlids. I found a brick that has 1.5" diameter holes in it's side. I thought that they might make interesting caves for the fish to hide in.

Well I just read something about bricks being used to elevate floating plants in goldfish ponds so I guess I am just going to try it.
I have only done so once in a tank, but have done repeatedly and long-term in ponds without problems.
my room mate has his driftwood tied to a brick with thick thread... he's had no problems sofar.

I'd think brick is similar to terra cotta as far as chemistry goes, and there is a whole lot of terra cotta harmlessly sitting out there in tanks…
I use those bricks you mention for breeding some fish without any problem. Only I cut them in half so they are not so big to move around.
Remember, if your not sure about adding something to your tank, pour a little white viniger on it. If it fizzes, then it's not good to add to the tank.
got bricks alover my 100 gl tank, no harm as long as you make sure you rinse it thoroughly. i did soaked them for a day if I remember correctly
