I currently have two clutches floating in a container in my tank and a third laid this morning. I was wanting to know what to look for when the babys are getting close to hatching(color change Ect.). i read the sticky at the top and saw that people have broken up the clutches to help the little ones escape. How will I know that I should do that? In the photo below the one on the left is three weeks old and the one on the right is just a week old. Thank for your help!

i have never had one take longer than 2 weeks to hatch. Typically they get a pretty noticeable color change near hatchign. They turn a grey/blue color as the eggs get thinner and the babies are about to chew their way out. You could observe them a little longer, but I would be tempted to break open that 3 week old one and see if its a dud (good inside).

msjinkzd thanks for the info. I did break it open and found only one little snail. I have it resting on a piece of damp paper towel in the container. does any one know is that's OK for it? Or should it go into the water?

The newborn needs to go into the water. Also the clutches get soft when ready to hatch so simply touch them and if they are soft and not hard then you now it is safe to break them open. Congrats on the baby.

Thanks for the info. I put the little guy in the water not knowing if it was alive or not, and now its hanging on the side of the container wall!!! Yay my first baby snail.:) The clutch it came from just kind of disintegrated in my hands when i messed with it. The little one I got was toward the outside of the clutch.
