I inherited daughters goldfish last summer. He is almost 3yrs. old how he made it this far is the Fishfairies help. Now, I have him and the first three months everything was perfect. He is about 7in. long from head to tail. 10gal. tank. The last month the Algae is so green. I change it 25 to even 50%, once a week and it stays a lighter shade of green. I have no plants, I was feeding twice a day, down to once. A fairly large pince of food. Lights are only on about three hours a day. Would it be safe just to start over and change all the water....and i guess feed him even less. No amonia and Nitrates are in the safe area.
Help

To me, the best solution would be an increase in tank size. Goldfish are hungry, get large, and produce the appropriate amount of waste. A ten just is not big enough. If you double it to a 20-long, the fish (and you) would be much happier and cleaner. If you could go all out and get the beast a 30-long, it could live out its full lifespan in health and happiness - and while your volumes handled would be larger, the tank would stay in good shape. There is nothing wrong with your care, just too much fish in too little water. That is not the fish fairies, it is you and your care, but the fish did grow.

I (finally) changed over a goldfish who has been living much too long in a 15 to a 33XL. I suspect he thinks he has died and gone to fish heaven - no algae build-up and much cleaner water. A 30-long would have done equally well, but I had a 33 available, and no 30s were.

I will consider the larger tank, but right now I would like to at least be able to see my fish Jack. I was wondering how much water you can take out and still be safe for the fish.

Change half of the water.

And yes please get a 20 or even 55 gallon tank.

10 gallon is way too small.

You can get rid of the Green water by turing off the light and placing a towel/trash bag so that no lights get in at all in the tank for 5-7 days, this will kill the algae.

I have always suggested folks to do a 25-50% weekly water change for FW fish tanks. This is simplest thing you can do to maintain the health of the fish and the prevention of diseases and waste build up.

Bigger tanks are always better:-)
