brine shrimp vs decapsulated brine shrimp

i paid 5.90$ for like 50 grams of bbs eggs and like 11.95$ for 1 pound of decap'ed

Oh cool, I know you can decap your own brine shrimp eggs (I've never done it though) but I didn't know they could be purchased that way. Thanks for letting me know theemon, it's a good option to have.

I'm going to go check out brineshrimpdirect.com. now.

Thanks for the info

Hey Sailed,

I have done both (decapping myself and buying them) - buying them already decapped is much easier and not that expensive. It is not hard to do it yourself and is good to know in case you get caught short and need something to feed your babies in a pinch. I got a REAL bad can of eggs awhile back (almost a 0% hatch rate) and had hundreds of babies to feed and no other options until my new eggs arrived. So I just decapped the bad eggs until I could get my hands on some good bs eggs. Worked like a charm and all the babies lived!

Hope it helps:

Ken's also carries the decapped bs eggs but I think they are cheaper at brineshrimp direct.

On the salt - I like the pickling and canning salt because it doesn't contain any anti-caking agents or iodine and it is only $1.32 for 4 lbs (or close to that). I'm not sure it really matters - just why I use that type of salt and not regular table salt.

For anyone interested in cultivating many different types of live foods at home, there was an article titled "A Fresh Start" by Stephen G. NOble on Feb/2011 issue of Aq Fish International Mag.

ur link is dead ponder.

btw i got free swimmer yeay!! even better the half that are free swimming, im 90% sure i saw atleast 2 eat decapped. hard to tell though kuz man there small, and the parents kept "mouthing" the ones i was watching... man there protective lol.

i also setup a bbs hatchery, using the dumbest stuff. my older egg tumbler broke as i was trying to set this up, so i used a long thin pasta cooker, it works well enough, not leaving any bbs eggs still on the bottom. i used regular table salt- maybe too much, i dunno.

excuzzzeme do you decap your bbs yourself or do you purchase them that way? (can they even be purchased that way?) If so how do you do it? Do you use chlorine bleach to decap them? Or do you use some other method?

Sorry for the barrage of questions. I'm just curious to know if there is more than one method. The one method I saw using chlorine bleach looked kind of sloppy, so it kind of turned me off to using it. (Maybe it wasn't the method itself but the demonstration).

They come decapped and no, they will not develop. I got mine from www.kensfish.com. He had them the cheapest and the funny thing is, they came in the same packaging the higher-priced ones from another source did. Go figure. My fry develop well with good coloring.

Ponderingky,

Thanks for that link (& for re-posting a working version of it). The decaping method it covers is similar to the one I'm familiar with but there are some slight variances which make me a bit more comfortable with the idea of trying to decap myself.

You're right, even if I never decap myself, it's still good to know in a pinch (e.g. get a bad batch of eggs like you did etc). I might even try it just to see if using decaped eggs as opposed to regular eggs produces different results in regarding to rearing fry.

excuzzzme,

Thank you for replying to my questions & for referring kensfish.com. I'm all for paying less for the same or similar product(s) too (that must make me crazy or something) so kensfish.com will be well worth looking into.

an update, man these egg shells are a pain in the butt. i couldnt get them from the top of the container, so i resulted to useing airhose to syphon them off, more was in my mouth then in the bucket :( do u guys worry about them or just go under them to get the bbs?

and what do i do about the unhatched eggs at the bottom? are they safe to get eatten? i tryed not to let them get in the "food" but i suspect some got in
