Bristlenose Pleco

Yeah, I feed that and even uncooked catfish cubes to my senegal bichir. people are amazed at what you can get from the grocery store to feed an aquarium fish. Most of my friends were amazed you could feed a fish tank with more than just tropical flakes!!! :P

Well I feed all of my fish shelled peas. They LOVE them. Even the angel.

But at night I put in a piece of slightly cooked zuchinni - it just drops to the bottom because its been blanched in hot water(make sure you let it cool down first) and drop in some sinking shrimp pellets for him.

I have found him eating the pellets when they mush up.

My other fish I dont think can see in the dark, so they pay no notice to the pellets.

I got a peice of driftwood for my bristle nose pleco and he has only gone over to it once that i've seen. He mostly stays on the rock i have in the tank. Do some plecos don't like driftwood?

females tend to be smaller than males. most females only get around 4-5" while males get to about 6-7.

Thanks for the info on how big they get fishcatch22 but it didn't really answer my question. Does my pleco not like driftwood or does he just go on the driftwood when I do see him?

If you have the right kind of wood, your pleco will eat it. Most plecs are nocturnal, so you just might not be seeing him eat it. Also, if he's well fed on other stuff, he won't need asmuch wood in his diet. I have a tank of juvies growing out and they're very well fed. Consequently, they don't bother with their driftwood very much. But, when I left town for a few days and put my girlfriend in charge, I returned to find piles and piles of "sawdust." Apparently she hadn't been feeding them as well as I usually do. I just have regular malaysian driftwood in there, plus a few twigs I found dried in the woods. The softer the wood, the better for them. The dried stuff mounted to slate works great because it's very soft. Also, hardwoods from the yard are fine, too. Just make sure to clean them very well (boiling is best) and soak them so they sink. In nature, wood-eating plecos eat the softest parts of the tree first, which is usually the very soft center or the bark. Hope that helps.

How do you blanch zuchinni?

i stick a slice in some wet paper towel for 30 seconds in the microwave and then put it in a little dish of aquarium water until it cools down. my albino BNs love it!

also, i think driftwood/bogwood is actually a necessary part of the BN's diet, so do keep some sort of wood...one of my BNs is almost always on the wood while the other only goes over there once in awhile, so maybe yours only wants it every now and again, but it should definitely be in there.

mine go crazy for zucchini. i toss it into some boiling water.

Bristlenose's eat aquarium background

I have three bristlenose suckermouths, which have grown from being smaller than a neon tetra to as big as my thumb in about six months.:)

For some reason they like eating the Juwel styrofoam background off the back of the tank and have stripped it bare in some patches. I may attempt to supplement their diet with frozen peas.

I bought three because I thought I had a big tank and could never see the bristlenoses. Having seen some of the four year old monsters in the local fish store I realise I may have to negotiate with wife for a bigger tank.

I thought that if I bought a tank that was big enough for me to be buried in, it would last me a lifetime!
