WE HAVE A BRITTLE STAR FISH THAT LOST ITS LEG 2 DAYS AGO,BUT ITS LEG CONTINUES TO LIVE IN FACT THE STAR FISH SEEMS TO BE HOLDING ONTO THIS LOST LEG ANY IDEAS? :dive: :dive: :dive:

Kinda confused here, the brittle star lost its leg and the lef that broke off is still alive? Or it has a damage leg thats still attached to the starfish?

If its still connected to the starfish it can regenerate the damaged parts, if the leg was completly cut off the leg will eventually die.

The star can regenearate its lost leg, and from what I've read legs can grow into complete starfish given time. If the leg is active, I'd leave it in the tank to regrow :)
BTW, you don't have to shout (type in caps) ;)

Brittle stars have the ability to regenerate their legs, similar to how a gecko can regenerate a lost tail. Their legs are fragile (maybe where the name comes from?).... I've had a few lose their legs in battles with large hermits over food... and everytime the leg has regrown.
Another thing that is normal, is for the leg to "twitch" for a day or two in the tank, perhaps a nerve issue....... Honestly, I find it quite disturbing and I eventually dig that leg out and flush it.

There has to be 1 complete leg and about 15-20% of the crown intact of it to regenerate into a complete animal, the chances of just a leg doing that is slim to none.
