brittle star loosing arms?

what would cause the brittle star to loose his arms? he has two arms that are fine, the others half or more gone. but they have note been eaten, they are on the bottom of the tank. kinda creepy, they are still moving. my first thought is that he is kinda large, 8" tip to tip, and he moved a piece of live rock and crushed them. he is still eating, he comes out at night and cleans up. but missing legs.

any ideas? thanks

Could be several things, stress, being attacked by a preditor (they will detach legs to escape), poor water quality. Lots of diffrent things can do it.
