help have just noticed small green caterpillar like grubs about 5 in total using parts of plant as sheaths to hide in while they feed on it about 7mm long green with darker strip in middle any ideas what they are and if harmful to tank

Are they little worms that leave behind a mess like these?
These guys took over one of my 10gals. I still don't know what they are. They do resemble little caterpillers but hide in tubes of muck. They are very very tiny.
