The ballast on this light went out. How would you repair this light for a planted tank? Would you just replace the ballast or would you do something else that would create more light for the tank? I would like to go with more light to try and get rid of the other fixture on the tank. I was looking at the thread (

DIY Compact Fluorescent (CFL) Strip Light Retrofit)about changing it to cfl's but the reflector is to shallow to use anything but regular fluorescent bulbs.

what type of bulb does it take? wattage? ballast rating? etc? Can't tell you if/what to upgrade if we don't know where to start. :)

Looks like a 48" 2-light T12 setup. cheapest/quickest fix is to buy a shoplite at Home depot/Lowe's/Menards, and gut/transplant the ballast. may even be easier to transplant the whole wiring harness. <$10 and done.

Other fixture? Are you running 2 of these? What size tank? Plants?

If you need more light, I'd consider an AH supply conversion.

It is a 75 gallon tank. With Amazon sword and wisteria at the moment. I am going to add different plants just trying to take things slow.
