When I bought my used 55 gal about 12 years ago the center brace was cracked. It was the removable kind so I bought some flat aluminum and stainless steel bolts and made a new brace that fit snug when the tank was empty so it would take the strain as the water filled the tank. Never had any problems, I just make sure and wipe down the aluminum when I clean the tank and the stainless bolts are still as shiny and the day I put them in.
BTW, is there any good way to find out the manufacturer of my tank? it is all-glass a little over a half-inch or so thick, but I don't see any markings anywhere to give me a clue who made it.
