Brown Algae New Tank Cycling (no fish)

Whoah!

OK. Everyone hold on a second...I was just going to run out to make a bunch of color copies to scan. I have a few shots of the Oranda in the 57 liter tank but I don't know how to post it here. I tried the insert image button but it seemed to require some type of link.

I was thinking that maybe I could add them to flicker or yahoo albums...would that work? It will take some time and still haven't eaten dinner. It's 11:00 P.M. I've got wake up at 6 A.M. Can I have them ready for everyone within the next couple of days?

Dear Tengtou,

Thanks for joining the conversation!

I spent a lot time going to goldfish stores and a couple of farms and was shocked out how much different the practive is from the theory or the general rules.

Goldfish in tanks outside directly under the sun. Self-service goldfish picking...take the goldfish out, put it a little plastic container if you don't like it dump it back in...goldfish packed in a single tank...a box type filter with only rocks...

The dry cleaning lady down the block from me has two very large common goldfish in a tank that just about lets them get around and she's had them for 9 years!

Of Filters and Fish

Fantail.

I picked up some of those noodle ceramics you mentioned...should I wash them before adding them?

What about cleaning the filter, sponge and changing the filter cartridge? I figure they all have to be cleaned at some point. Is there a general rule of thumb?

How long before I should start getting concerned about the brown algae? will it disappear from the gravel on its own?

Here's a link to what it looks like. http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/chuo104/album?.dir=/3a8bscd

I want to put up some more photos from a few books that I have that I think will be revelent to this post tomorrow.

All your fish are beautiful and I enjoyed looking at them. The splodges arent pox as they would look like molten wax. Its not a fungus either, and as they have been there for so long its not ich.
All I can think is that its just normal tissue thats just thickened up in those areas.
Im sure others will have a look and see for you.
I couldnt see any brown algae and from the looks of your tanks they all appear to be healthy and well maintained.

You dont need to wash the noodles, just put them in.
As for cleaning the filter sponges, only do those once a tank has fully cycled. When you do a water change, in a bucket of tank water take the sponge out and rinse and squeeze it out in the water until its clean again. Some makes of filters say to change the pad all the time but only do this if its not a sponge and you cant get it clean any more. The ceramic noodles only need a wash through every three months in old tank water.

The box filters you have wont cycle so just change the filter wool when its dirty.

I hope that helped and no doubt you will get lots more advice and help :)

Dear fantail,

Not pox or fungus!? hmmmm. I wonder if it's safe to put them in with the the oranda? I'll wait a little longer...

Thank you for taking time out to answer my questions in detail. It was a great learning experience. Take care.

Sincerely,

g-fish
