brown algae yuck!!!!!

I'm having the exact same problem, it's a rust colored algae. My tank has been set up for about 2 months. The algae in my tank is also taking over all the rocks, which were originally white, and making it's way up the glass.

The process is more rapid in my 10g, though, and I've already had 2 ottos pass. :(

So I don't wanna get any more ottos... hopefully it'll go away.

I had the exact same problem with brown algae about 1.5-3 months after both my 10G and 20G tanks had been set up.

Believe it or not, it mostly went away on its own in my 20G. In my 10G the situation improved, but never completely went away so I put 3 Otos in there any they literally tore through the remaining algae in a day!

I would say not to worry about the brown algae unless it lasts for more than a couple of months. I know its hard to wait it out, but unless you want to add some Otos or other algae eaters, I'm not sure if there is another way.

sorry it took so long for me to post a reply. the tank was fully cycled before i stocked it. i had two fiilters an AC 50 and a rena xp2 the AC 50 took a crap so i just have the rena for the time being but i think it'll be fine until i can get a replacement for the AC.

Its good to see that my good friend at my LFS gave me the goods when it came to the info.... Cause if you could believe it, my 55 has been setup for 2 months and I have started getting diatoms and he gave me the same info found here.  :thm: :thm:

Oh but he didnt tell me how long id have to wait for it to go away. Do more frequent water changes quicken the leaching process or is it a wait and watch issue ?
