Almost overnight, my tank LR got lots of brown algae on it. Doesn't look slimy....looks like the LR got colored. Does anyone know what it is and how I get rid of it (or is it a good thing)? THANK YOU.

I'm going to go ahead and guess it's diatoms.

The next question that someone will ask will be to post your water parameters, followed by how long your tank has been set-up.

If it is diatoms, it isn't a 'bad' thing. Unsightly. Some cleaning crew animals can take care of that.

lol. last poster hit the major questions.

if it is diatoms. it will pass in time. everyone goes through the diatom outbreak at first.

Thanks all. The water parameters are--
PH 8.2 AMONIA 0 NITRATE .25 and NITRITES 15

Needless to say I did a 5 gal water change on my 45 gallon tank....waiting for things to settle then I will retake measure for nitrites.

Went out and got an enhanced clean up crew. 2 money cowreys 1 conch 1 emrald crab 2 nitro(Sp) snails I have 2 peppermint shrimp, 1 cowrey snail, 3 hermits and 1 serpent star.

Found out that I must have augmented the issue becuase I was overfeeding (what a newbie) was told to use 10 drops a day of phytofeast and tonight the LFS told me its 1 drop per 10 gallons....4 drops every other day. Live and learn

Also got to validate that my filter was good set-up (sump-LR-Cheto-Protien skimmer-sponge to catch some debris)

Can't wait for another month to pass since the tank is only three weeks old.

a few observations...

What type of conch have you brought?

Personally, i would feed every other day, they will get what they need in between feeds fromt he rock and sand...

Dont forget to keep cleaning the sponge every week in tank water....

I would not bother changing any water now untill nitrates have come back down to about >10 and nitrITES are zero...Then do a good 50% water change..

I purchased a Queen Conch. Also, Niko...why would you wait and do a 50% water change once the nitrates came back down. Is that just part of the cureing cycle?
